Fedotovreeds is a company of two brothers, Alexey and Sergei Fedotov.
Our grandfather, Prohor Fedotov (1909-1991) was a clarinet professor at the State Conservatory in Gorki (nowadays Nizhny Novgorod), Russia. He made the reeds for himself, but also for his students. What’s especially impressive is, that he manufactured them all by the hand, without any machinary, only using a knife and sandpaper! These reeds helped his students to master the instrument and achieve a beautiful sound and playing flexibility. He taught my brother and me the skills of reed making and passed on many of his secrets of this profession.
Our clarinet professors and teachers also produced reeds and were mostly German system players. That’s why we have this typical warm beautiful sound in ear. This kind of sound is appreciated worldwide. We consider multiple different characteristics while designing our reed cuts such as remarkable playing flexibility and blowing freedom.
In order for the reeds to reach customers all around the world, the amount of manufactured reeds must be increased constantly, but the quality must remain top level. This cannot be realized without appropriate manufacturing machinery.
Sergei Fedotov has studied not only clarinet, but also mechanical engineering. He built his own high- precision machines producing bottom- and upper parts of the reeds. That is why all reeds almost have the same playing quality. This ensures that there is never the problem to only pick the best reeds from a box.
Alexey Fedotov studied in Russia and in Austria; the latter study was at the Anton Bruckner Private University in Linz (Austria), by Prof. Gerald Kraxberger. Alexey collaborates with Sergei in reeds cut design for clarinets and saxophones. Alexey Fedotov is an importer of FedotovReeds and since 2019 he is also the general distributor of FedotovReeds in Europe and owner of Fedotovreeds.com.
